It wasn’t intentional. Physically I could not walk through the doorway. It was as if some invisible door had closed. My feet could not cross the threshold.

James whispered to Sandi, “You’ve consecrated the house, you have to invite her in.”

Her eyes widened. “You can sense my protections?” She mumbled curiously to herself. “I run salt around the property every year and say a few words a woman taught me once, I wasn’t sure they worked.” She eyed James curiously, “Did I invite you in before?”

He nodded, “You said please come in.”

Sandi turned back to me, “Claire, won’t you please come in?”

Just like that the barrier was removed and I easily stepped across the threshold. I heard my mother’s voice call out from the kitchen.

Between books HK reads voraciously. Anything with a good plot and compelling characters are her broad parameters. One is as likely to catch her with a copy of Don Quixote as with the latest Kristen Ashley.
