EXCERPT

I open my mouth to scream for help but that chance is taken away by those same pair of hands as it clasps over my lips. I thrash against his hold when suddenly another man comes in and holds my legs, helping my captor.
The man in front of me wears a black coverall with his face being hidden by the white vendetta mask. We reach the dock side, where a boat behind the ship catches my sight. Another man in the same attire is already waiting as the men throw me to him. He catches me and I take that chance to scream at the top of my lungs for help. It is ear-piercing even to me and I almost plan to jump out of the boat to swim away.
“Help! Help me! Someone!” I scream.
The boat trembles when the one who held my arms jumps on it and grasps my jaw. Pulling out a huge, shiny knife he points the tip right at my throat.
My body turns still like a statue with fear clawing my nerves. His face is also hidden with the mask but yet I can feel his warmth close to my face.
“Done with screaming?” his muffled, gruff voice asks.
I remain silent.
He tilts his head sideways, digging the knife a bit more against my racing pulse. “One more word from that pretty little mouth and I’ll stab the blade right through your throat.”
The coldness and emptiness in his voice sent chills down my spine. It feels like it doesn't matter if I live or die before wherever he is taking me. He let go of my jaw before presenting his hand to the other man who passed him an injection.
The tears I have been holding back, leak from my eyes as the memories of being injected several times flash in front of me.
“Shedding tears won’t save you, little girl,” he mutters, bringing the needle close to my arms. My body starts to shiver from the cold and fear. Adrenaline rushing through my spine like never before.
He leans closer when I feel the light prickle of the needle against my skin as he presses the syringe. “The least you fight, the easier it will be for you. Trust me.”
Trust him? Trust a man who is holding my life like a loose thread?
Never. And yet, something about those last two words of his holds a promise.
A promise that I’m unaware of and still wanted to believe deep down. Soon that same feeling of my numbing nerves return. My eyes start to become drowsy and I know I'm going to hit my head on the boat’s plank as I will fall sideways, but I no longer have control over my body.

EXCERPT

I left one hell for another. The sleeping spell has worn off, and now I’m back.
I can’t see a fucking thing, and when I take a step, my legs give out beneath me. My knee scrapes against the concrete, and the sting shoots up my leg. “Son of a bitch,” I growl, carefully touching my knee. My teeth chatter and my body shakes with not only being cold but from fury. I’ve never been weak like this before. I’m also starving. My stomach feels as if it’s burning and twisting into tight knots.
The weight of the bracelet is heavy on my wrist, and I grip it as hard as I can, pulling until my muscles begin to shake. “Dammit,” I shout, knocking myself off balance. I reach out into the darkness, grabbing onto the first thing I can to stop my fall. Bottles clank together as I grip the shelf and take a deep breath. Slowly, I reach out to touch the bottles, wishing like hell I could use my wolf sight to see. I remember Chase saying that’s where he was going to keep me … in his wine cellar. Bastard.
“Chase!” I shout as loud as I can. Fumbling through the dark, I feel around the walls until I find the staircase. I’m not staying in the goddamned cellar any longer. I start up the stairs, and there’s a sliver of light at the bottom crack of the door.
“Chase!” I shout, balling my fist tight and banging on the wood. Pain shoots up my arm, and I curse under my breath. If I had my strength, I’d break down the damn door. “So help me,” I scream, beating the door even harder, “if you don’t open up this fucking door, I’m going to destroy every single bottle of wine you have down here.” A few seconds pass, and nothing. “Chase!” Huffing, I grip onto the handrail and start down into the dark. “All right, here I go, asshole!” The door swings open, filling the staircase with the brightest light I’ve ever seen. “What the hell?” I hiss, turning my face away. I blink a few times until my eyes adjust. When I look up at the top of the stairs, Chase is there with an enormous, shit-eating grin on his face. “You’re not going to be smiling like that for long.”
Chase rears his head back and laughs. “Oh yeah? And how are you going to stop me?”
Growling, I storm up the stairs and lift my hand to smack him, but when I try to connect, it’s as if I moved in slow motion.
Chase snatches my wrist and grins, his blue eyes piercing right through me. “I’m going to love having you around.”

EXCERPT

As the library fell into silence once more, Catherine stood and quietly made her way back to where Quin slept. As she came around a corner, she watched as his chest rose and fell with a peaceful rhythm. Should she wake him? She turned to the large clock guarding the doorway; it was late in the afternoon. No telling how long he’d been asleep. But if he had any prayer of sleeping this evening, he probably should awaken.
Or so she told herself as she stepped forward. She knelt beside the sofa. Tipping her head to get a better perspective of his face, she studied him. He was so peaceful in sleep; the pensive expression that would filter across his face was absent, and he looked younger, even though he was still several years older than her. Without thinking, she brushed away a wayward curl that had fallen over his forehead, her fingers grazing his skin ever so lightly, but the touch sent a shock through her, causing her to gasp.
Quin’s eyes opened, and he blinked several times before his eyes focused on hers.
“Quin?” she said softly, her voice foreign to her own ears.
His expression sharpened, not with the awareness that usually followed waking up, but with a tenderness that was deeply familiar, as if he’d been waking up to the sound of her voice for months—years.
It warmed her, filled her with something she’d forgotten and never named. It reached in, wrapping itself tightly around her. Heartbeat stuttering, she was reminded of the way she felt when she had first been kissed by Avery, just after their engagement. The breathlessness, the anticipation, the desire: she had forgotten how it felt to have that connection, that vulnerability with someone.
“Catherine?” He said her name like a prayer, his soul drinking her in.
Without realizing it, she moved her hand to cup his jawline, the million sensations of his skin’s texture and his slight stubble swirling in her mind and captivating her with that simple touch. She lowered her attention to his lips, unable to look away. She’d never initiated a kiss, but his lips were too great a temptation, and she leaned forward, unable to stop the compromising movement.
As if impatient with her hesitant movement, Quin surged toward her and captured her lips. She had anticipated a soft, tender kiss, but she was wrong. His lips covered hers with a demand that left her senseless and hungry. This was no simple meeting of the lips. This was a devouring, and she leaned into it, craving the desire she tasted there. The kiss apparently wasn’t enough for him, and his hands arched over her shoulders and pulled her closer, wrapping around her back and holding her captive as he continued to ravage her lips.
Never had she experienced such a kiss. It was new, exhilarating, and awakened something within her she hadn’t known lay in wait. His tongue was wicked, branding her from the inside out as he danced around her lips, playing coy with her own tentative tongue and teaching her with every seductive stroke. His teeth gently nipped at her, playfully drawing her in, making it more than just passion, making it a seductive game that she wanted to play.
Then, abruptly he pulled back, his expression wide and alert.
Catherine tried to gather her wits about her at the sudden end of the passionate exchange. He still held her, but his movements had frozen, much like the hold he had on her back.
His eyes narrowed, and he inclined his head.
“Dear merciful heavens,” he said, then released her, slowly inching away.
She felt the distance like a wash of cold water, a chilling premonition warning her from the inside out. What had they done?
“Am I really awake then?” he asked.
What an odd question.
Catherine tilted her chin and frowned. Did he think this all a dream? Who did he kiss like that while dreaming? Jealousy flowed through her veins at the thought of some mysterious rival for his affection.
Belatedly, she realized what that meant for her own emotions.
He was watching her, as if expecting an answer.
She nodded. “Are your dreams so real?” she asked, a little irritated at his horrified expression.
“Bloody hell.” The words rushed out of him.
“Pardon?” Catherine replied, trying not to feel insulted, but honestly, who kissed a lady like that and then swore when he realized his actions?
“I… That is—… Excuse me.” Quin stood and rubbed his hand down his face. “Catherine, I’m so sorry. That was…unpardonable.” His eyes fixed on the floor as the words tumbled out.
Catherine stood then, pushing back her irritation and hurt, and debated on the best course of action.
With a feeling rooted in mischief, she formulated a plan.
As Quin’s stare lingered on the carpet, clearly tormented, Catherine closed the distance between them. Propriety be damned, what was done was already done. Now she would savor the moment, the touch and feel of him. A shiver of deep anticipation rocked through her.
His regard met hers, and as her cheeks heated with her forward manner, she leaned up on her tiptoes, grasped his shoulders for balance, and kissed him, ever so softly. It was an invitation, an open door that he could walk through should he wish. His lips were soft, embracing hers for a moment, yet hesitant, as if unsure he was truly awake or still dreaming. She withdrew slightly, speaking softly against his warm lips.
“Every dream should have a happy ending. Don’t ruin this for me either.” She lingered there, hovering, waiting for him to answer her, to make a decision—though the decision was made for them. They had kissed; she was as compromised as if he’d bedded her. But honor and desire didn’t necessarily mean the same thing, so she waited to see what lay in his heart.
And answer her, he did.

EXCERPT:

A Lexus pulled into her driveway and I saw the bitch get out of the car. Two boys slid out then a slim form with subtle curves. Charisma. She lifted her face to the sun and my heart stuttered in my chest. Christ! I swallowed my food and nearly choked on the large bite. Shade had mentioned she’d been with Heather for a decade, which made her around twenty-seven now. Roughly half my age, but fuck if she wasn’t stunning. She reached into the car and helped out a little girl I knew had to be her daughter, Nova.

And that’s the moment I knew I’d do whatever it took to keep those four safe. Charisma, Nova, and the two boys would never be hurt again. The way she cradled her daughter against her side, the protective stance she took between Heather and those boys, told me one thing — the girl wasn’t hurting anyone. Unless it was Heather. She had murder in her eyes when she stared at the woman. Crazy bitch only smirked back at her.

I texted Shade.

Change of plans. I’m bringing them all home with me.

Those boys reminded me of Samurai when he’d been a teen. Small and wiry. And they were both at least half-Asian. It seemed Heather had a type.

I watched them go into the house with the She-Devil and shut the door. After I finished my food, I pulled out of the parking lot and moved over to her home, stopping my Jeep right behind her fancy car. Reaching into the backseat, I picked up my cut, as well as the brass knuckles I’d hidden underneath it. I slid the weapon into my pocket and got out of the vehicle. Pulling on my cut, I shut the door, locked the car, and went up to ring the bell.

Charisma opened the door, her eyes going wide when she saw me. She skimmed over my cut, her gaze locking on the patches denoting my club, name, and rank. She finished her perusal before lifting her gaze to mine again. I caught movement in my peripheral. Judging the size and shape, it was her daughter.

I pulled my keys from my pocket and tipped my head toward the driveway. “Take your daughter and get in the Jeep. Lock the doors and wait for me.”

Her eyebrows went up. She stared, not moving and not speaking. She reached up to tuck her hair behind her eat and I growled at what I saw. Someone had damaged her with what looked like acid. I moved slow, not wanting to startle her, and checked the other side. Son of a bitch. Whoever had hurt her, had harmed both ears. Which meant… I mouthed the words slowly. “Can you hear me?”

Her eyes widened and she shook her head.

“What else did that bitch do to you?” I asked, mouthing the words slowly again.

Her cheeks flushed and she dropped her gaze. Shame. Whatever had been done to her, she was ashamed to tell me. I had a feeling I understood why she was still here with Heather. The woman used the boys against her, and probably used her against them. If she’d touched Nova, I’d make her suffer longer.

I tipped her chin up. “Take my keys. Get your daughter and wait in the Jeep. Lock the doors. Do you understand?”

She nodded and reached behind her. I saw Nova’s small fingers wrap around hers and Charisma took my keys. She hesitated, her gaze searching mine.

“I’ll get the boys out too.”

Her posture relaxed and she hurried to the Jeep with Nova in tow. Nothing in the reports Shade had found from social services mentioned Charisma being unable to hear. It had to have happened either right before she aged out, or after. For whatever reason, he couldn’t find any updates from the social workers the months leading up to her turning eighteen. Her exit had been little more than a few notes including how wonderful Heather had been to let her stay. I didn’t like being blindsided, but at least she would be safe now. All of them would be.

EXCERPT:

Cade flinched at the sound of her bedroom door slamming. He leaned his shoulder against the side of the house and let out a sigh. “I don’t get it. What did I say?”

Nora put a hand on his arm. “Nothing. She’s a teenager, so her moods are going to be all over the place.”

“But I thought things were going so well. She was even laughing at lunch.”

“Which might be part of the problem. Remember, she just lost her mom and has been uprooted to this new place. She might feel guilty for having fun or for enjoying this farm—like if she starts to like you and Bryn too much, that it will be a betrayal to her mom.”

“You might be right.” He offered her a smile. “What’s that advice gonna cost me?”

She grinned up at him. “One baked ziti dinner.”

“Done. I’ll even throw in a slice of pie.” He tried to laugh, but the anguish of the situation was getting to him, and he dropped his chin to his chest. “Ya know, I consider myself a pretty tough guy, but this parenting stuff is rough.”

Nora took a step toward him. “I have to warn you that I’m a hugger by nature, and it’s killing me not to be able to offer you a hug. Like I’m totally comin’ in hot right now, so if you don’t want to be smothered in a hug, you need to stop me now.”

The idea of wrapping his arms around Nora had emotions burning his throat. Which was weird since his feelings toward women weren’t generally led by his heart. But something about this woman, with her sunny attitude and her giving nature was getting to him. He opened his arms, and she stepped into them and wrapped herself around him.

He let out his breath as she sunk into him, and he bent his head and buried his face in her hair. “You feel good,” he whispered, then cleared his throat. “I mean this feels good.”

“So do you,” she murmured into his chest.

She pulled back, but he wasn’t ready to let her go and kept his arms circled around her waist. She looked up at from under long eyelashes, and he couldn’t tear his eyes away.

There was something here. He knew it, and he was sure she did too. The electricity between them was almost visible as if it shimmered in the air. They’d been teasing and flirting and touching the last few days, but this felt different. This was more than playful flirtation.

He dropped his gaze to her mouth and wanted to groan. Her lips were plump and parted, as if just begging to be kissed.

He leaned down and softly grazed her lips with his—not quite a kiss but enough to feel the soft catch of her breath and the delicious enticement of her mouth.

“What’s this going to cost me?” he whispered, but he already knew the answer.

It was going to cost him everything.
