A DARK CURSE

Miss Arabella Howland is content to forgo the London marriage mill to assist her father in his research, especially when it comes to his intriguing patient, Louis Radman. But it’s not long before Bella’s curiosity alerts her to the danger of her father’s work . . . and to the fact that Louis is not who or whathe seems.

A BRIGHT PROMISE

After centuries struggling with his vile existence, Louis Radman will soon be free of his affliction, thanks to his very capable physician. Unfortunately, his heart is less secure around the man’s tempting daughter. His yearning to walk in the light once more is complicated by his desire for the delightful Bella, who is as intelligent as she is fearless. But if history has taught him anything, it’s not to tempt fate.

AN UNFORGIVING PAST

Still, happiness has a price and Louis is soon reminded that mortality comes with unfortunate limitations. To protect his new bride, he must face the demons from his past who wish to pull him back into their vampiric fold.

Yet, if he’s forced to return to his midnight world, will he lose his beloved Bella forever?

EXCERPT #3

“What are you afraid I’ll see, Louis? Something horrible? Something that will send me screaming from you?”

His eyes darkened and canted downward. “Accept what is before you.”

“But it’s not real.”

His smiled sadly. “You are not ready for that kind of reality. This is the form you are familiar with. It is me. It is how I looked when I still lived. Nothing has changed, nothing in three centuries.”

“What else are you? Show me if you are not afraid. What do you hide behind this pretty picture that’s meant to seduce and deceive by its beauty? Are you like a bog that casts the illusion of smooth green grass to conceal the fetid slime below until the unwary falls in and cannot escape its pull?”

“Bella, you don’t want to know.” He grew irritated with her insistence. Or was he simply afraid?

“Yes, I do. Show me, Louis. Show me what I’ve married. Show me what sleeps in a box downstairs and feeds off the blood of the living. Off my blood! Show me!”

“Is this what you want to see?”

And the change was so rapid and absolute, she could scarcely comprehend it. And it was horrible. She’d seen a shadow of it at her father’s office. The being she beheld was not the beautiful and elegant Louis Radman, but a frightening apparition of gaunt, pallid skin, eyes that gleamed red with a feral brilliance, thin, cold lips that curled back from teeth shaped like an animal’s fangs. He gestured to his face. Even his hands were different, pasty looking, with long, transparent nails.

“Is this what you prefer to look upon? Or maybe this?”

And he continued to shift and change, becoming something altogether alien—not human at all—with wolven features and fur instead of flesh. But the eyes were the same: Those red, unholy eyes. Changing still, a collage of impressions, animal, rodent, awful.

Then pin dots of light enveloped him, flaring to a hurtful brilliance before fading into a thick, mobile fog, a mist that transfixed and surrounded her even as she started to cry out in terror. It felt cool, then burning hot against her skin, brushing like a caress, awaking a startling arousal of sensation from her. The power, the chill of death, the overwhelming helplessness that smothered her will.

Then his voice spoke close to her ear, within her mind, a cruel and tormented whisper, “This is what I am. Are you satisfied now?”

And Arabella swooned dead away.

EXCERPT #2

He wasn’t sure what exactly happened. One moment she was all clinging vulnerability and the next, her purpose shifted to an aggressive. Grasping fingers began a hard kneading pressure along the muscles of his back and shoulders while her supple body pressed against him. He almost pulled away—not because he didn’t like it, but because it was such an unexpected change.

Her breathing stroked along the side of his neck in light, panting whispers. He held his own suspended then it gusted out in an explosive sigh when he felt the first soft brush of her lips there, just below his ear, followed by the lingering rasp of her tongue. Her fingers had come up to rub along his jaw in a demanding passion, then clamped with a paralyzing sharpness into the cording on the other side of his neck. In a brief spike of surprise, he realized he couldn’t move. Then he didn’t want to. He forgot about struggle. He wasn’t thinking about making love to her, or even of how to respond to what she was doing. He was lost, hypnotized by the seducing caress of her breath upon his throat. Beneath the urgent press of her mouth, his pulse was lulled into a seductive sluggishness. He was aware of his eyes closing, of the world darkening. Mon Dieu, was he going to swoon?

Suddenly, Nicole shoved away from him, forcing him to scramble for balance. He shook his head, trying to free his mind from its odd lethargy.

“No,” she cried out in anguish. “I won’t. I can’t.”

EXCERPT #1

A FINE MIST seeped beneath the casements, spilling down to the dark bedroom floor where it massed and roiled and finally gave way to a form that looked human but was not.

Louis regarded the woman asleep upon the bed, his features dispassionate, his tone a low dangerous growl.

“You are complicating my life, Cassie Alexander.”

The blonde head tossed restlessly upon a lace-edged pillow. He went on, knowing she couldn’t hear him, at least on a conscious level.

“I don’t know what you’ve planned, but it will not succeed. I am not looking for someone to replace the woman I wed. I will not have you pushed upon me. You are not my concern.”

Cassie made a small sound and shifted beneath the covers. Her movement tugged the quilt and linen down so they tangled about her waist. The thin nightdress she wore pulled taut across full breasts, tempting his gaze to linger there, then at the demurely tied neckline. And because he was not unmoved by the sight, Louis’s mood darkened.

“You do not know what I am, foolish girl. You don’t understand the danger you’re courting. You have invited me in with all the blackness that accompanies me. Unknowingly, you’ve placed your fragile life into my hands. These hands have the blood of centuries on them. Yours could mingle there as well.”

She sighed with a quiet contentment in her dream, oblivious to his dire warning. Then her body arched against those frail bedclothes almost as if she were entertaining a lover. A single name escaped her in a husky purr.

“Louis.”

He stood for a moment, shocked by the confusion of desires her sultry plea called to. More distressing was the sudden want that rose in response.

She didn’t know what she called to. He was no man who could sink into the heaven of her embrace, to take from her kisses and savor the supple human warmth of her body. He was no lover to woo her in the way she deserved. All he was free to give her was the demon inside him. All he could share was the vileness of what he really was, drawing her into the same shadow of the damned that surrounded him.

The temptation rose, hot, swirling, unbearably enticing. So easy to excuse his weakness by saying he couldn’t help acting upon the instincts of his kind. If that was all it was, he would not be lingering still, chafing with forbidden longing. He would take from her without conscience, without care and be gone before she was aware of him.

But that wasn’t the way he wished to possess her—fleetingly, anonymously—in the night.

And because he recognized his darker motives, he resisted the pull.

Then, realizing that he was the one now courting danger, he made his figure shimmer and thin to a vaporous impression, finally collecting into a phantom fog and slipping out as silently as he’d come.
